Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am writing to formally petition for credit in the Psyc 241 (Social psychology) course, which I unfortunately failed during the 2024 school year. I understand the importance of maintaining academic standards, but I believe that my extenuating circumstances warrant special consideration.
During the academic year, I experienced the loss of my father, who passed away unexpectedly from addiction. As a recovered addict myself (5 years sober) This event had a significant impact on my emotional and psychological well-being, which in turn affected my academic performance. I struggled to cope with the grief and responsibilities that followed. My number one priority was to stay focused on my own recovery. For approximately 6 months after his passing, I found it challenging to focus on my studies and fulfill my academic obligations. I was able to complete all course work but, failed the final exam.
As a result of my emotional distress, I was unable to perform to the best of my ability in my courses, specifically in Psyc 241. Despite my efforts to maintain my grades, the overwhelming nature of my grief ultimately led to my failure in this class.
In response to these challenges, I sought support from a personal counselor, who provided me with guidance and coping strategies to better manage my grief and academic responsibilities. I also communicated with my other professors, who were understanding and accommodating during this difficult time.
I respectfully request that you consider my situation and the direct impact my father's passing had on my academic performance. I believe that granting me credit for the failed class would be a fair acknowledgment of the extenuating circumstances I faced.
Thank you for considering my petition.
Kindly,
Katelyn Cathcart
