Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom it may concern,
I am writing this petition to ask permission that I may take 9.0 units of LOP instead of 6.0. I have 3 main reasons why I believe I should be granted permission to do this. My first reason is that I believe this course will help enrich my learnings in my computer science degree. The LOP course is the replacement course for CISC 181; Digital Societies, which was removed from the course offerings last year. I believe that in this day and age of rapidly changing technology, the course will help equip me with the skills and knowledge to be well prepared when I enter the workforce post grad.
Secondly, this course is offered online which will be crucial for me this semester, as I frequently travel between home and school and sometimes need to spend some time at home. I currently run a mountain bike race (https://www.highlandsenduro.com) in which some aspects of the organization must be done in person. While I know that school comes first, this extra circular activity has helped me apply and solidify my learnings immensely, especially as I work towards my CIB in addition to my BAComp.
Lastly, I have had plans to take this final LOP course for several semesters now, and had planned to do so before the rule change. While I fully take responsibility for not being aware of the change, I did- on 3 separate occasions- speak with drop in academic advising to make sure that all would work with my graduation. I spoke to them both before and after applying for the LOP. They has my files pulled up and I mentioned to each one I had already taken LOP credits. Not one of them raised any concern to me about the rule change. I have requested the video transcripts of these calls to further verify, but have not heard back from advising. Again, I fully acknowledge that it is my responsibility to do the due diligence into these rules, I hope that it can be understood that to my knowledge, speaking with academic advising was doing my due diligence. Since this is also the last credit I need to graduate, I would not have been willing to take any chances that I did not have all the necessary information, which further proves I really did believe contacting academic advising was where I could get the most accurate and up to date information regarding courses, credits and LOP's.
I sincerely appreciate your consideration in this matter and look forwards to hearing back from you.
Hannah

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: My academic plan is to complete this LOP course in a timely manner so that I may focus on my other classes this semester. I will further confirm that I meet all other requirements for graduation. I will then also check in with the graduation department to ensure that I am taken off the conditional graduation list. Furthermore when I finish my LOP course, I have already spoken to the graduation department and know I must let them know that I have finished it right away so that they can confirm my graduation this spring.
Moving forwards I know that I need to consult multiple sources when making a decision like this. I should also create a contingency plan so that if something changes, I know that I have a backup plan that will still allow me to reach my goal.
