Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am writing this letter to formally petition to add the course SOCY 301 after the add/drop course deadline due to an academic circumstance that was out of my control.
I am a fifth-year Health Studies student and have been working hard towards my degree over the years. I was under the impression that I was on track to graduate in Spring 2025; however, I received an email this afternoon (January 30) stating that I am missing 3.0 credits.
As I applied to graduate on December 8, I was under the impression that:
“Students who apply by Wednesday, December 18, will be guaranteed a review of their application before the last day to add or drop a course for the Winter 2025 term.”
That said, there seems to have been some mistake. I was notified by the Arts and Science Degree Requirements email today that, somehow, my record was missed until they reviewed the fail report. As well, there is no explanation for why my AAR was missed during the initial review, and I am being given this critical information very late. I was unaware and was only notified two weeks after the add/drop date that I did not have enough credits to graduate, even though I was promised a review of my application beforehand to ensure that I was on track to graduate.
If I had known before the add/drop date, I would have planned accordingly and avoided this petition. Given that this mistake was not on my behalf, I was recommended to submit a petition to add a course late.
I am incredibly committed to graduating in Spring 2025, as I have already completed my graduate school applications and was looking forward to completing the undergraduate degree I have been working hard toward. I would be highly disheartened if this circumstance, which was completely out of my control, were to affect my ability to graduate.
I have spoken to the professor, Ayca Tomac, via email, and she has agreed to allow me to enroll in SOCY 301 if my petition is approved.
Thank you for considering my request.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Academic Circumstances: Technical Mistake by the Arts and Science Faculty
I have complete faith that I can catch up in this class. I am an incredibly organized person and have never struggled with my course load. I am committed to completing this course to the best of my ability, and I am not in a heavy course load that would affect my ability to complete one more course successfully.
I have reviewed the syllabus of this class, and it is of great interest to me, which makes me believe that it will be suitable given my circumstances. I have also taken sociology courses in the past and understand the formatting and academic requirements for a course similar to this.
I have spoken to the course professor, and she has agreed that I can enroll in this class.
Given that this circumstance was due to a mistake that was out of my control and does not reflect my previous academic performance, I completely believe that I am capable of catching up on the material that I have missed.
