Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,
Please accept this letter as my formal request for an Academic Petition for a late course drop of my RELS 322: Yoga in India and the West taken in Winter 2024. I am requesting that you consider allowing me to drop this course late so that it may not impact my transcript due to the extenuating circumstance associated with the passing of my grandmother on April 14, 2024. Sadly, since her passing, I have been dealing with some emotional and mental health challenges which affected my academic performance.
My grandmother passed away in April 2024 after a battle with dementia and cancer in several areas of her body. My grandmother lived permanently with me in my family home and was very involved in our everyday lives. My grandmother and I had a very close relationship and I always admired her as being a strong, independent, hard-working, and compassionate woman. Additionally, she was a very important part of my spirituality and upbringing. My grandmother practiced a type of nature-based spirituality, teaching me everything I know about earth and our connection to it as human-beings. Because of our strong connection, her passing has been significantly difficult on me and grieving her presence has affected my mental health.
Unfortunately, due to my grandmother’s illnesses it was extremely difficult watching her brain deteriorate as my family took care of her in our home to up until her final days. Having this going on in my life affected me in all of my winter semester classes throughout the term and afterward. This event greatly impacted my ability to focus on this classes coursework and fulfill the academic requirements for succeeding. Despite my best efforts to keep up with the material in all of my classes, I found myself unable to meet the demands of this course due to the personal toll of the situation. I managed to complete the rest of my classes in good standing for the winter 2024 term, which I hope you will consider when reviewing my petition.
After my grandmother’s passing in April, I was unable to move back home with my family due to unstable home conditions. I had to take on a greater financial responsibility at this time, and. I have been working full-time ever since to support myself through school (and housing costs). The financial strain, combined with my emotional distress, created additional stress, further hindering my ability to focus on academic responsibilities. This is why I was unable to complete the coursework after my instructor applied an “incomplete” grade.
I believe that in light of these extenuating circumstances, dropping the course would ensure that my academic record remains reflective of my ability to perform under normal conditions. Please let me know if any additional documentation or information is needed to support my request. I am grateful for your time and consideration in this matter and would appreciate any assistance you can provide during this challenging time.
Thank you for your understanding.
Kind Regards,
Fiona Parfitt
