Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean Academic,
I am petitioning to have ECON 222 (Winter, 2023) dropped from my academic record. During my final year of university I was experiencing extreme depression, anxiety, and unaided ADHD. I experienced severe anxiety attacks almost every day, could scarcely leave my bed to attend classes, do course work, eat, or even see friends. Looking back at this time in my life fills me still with a huge amount of anxiety. Indeed, every time I have tried to even revisit Solus, or check my outlook emails I have had a panic attack. During my fourth year year I had no capability to take care of myself, and I was barley getting by. I required extensions and accommodations in all my courses to complete the year. However, for this one course I had a few experiences of severe anxiety attacks when attending, and after discussions with my therapist I decided it was too much on my plate, and it would be best to drop the course and complete it later. I had never even attended to midterm and would have dropped it earlier if I had the tools or knowledge to advocate for myself and my mental health at the start of term.
Throughout my university degree academics were of utmost importance to me, and this course was the final ECON course needed to complete my minor. I was confident in my ability to do it, but I just literally could not due to my mental health at that time. As such, it was recommended I finish it after the term ends with a deferred exam. Then it was recommended I graduate with my BSc in Environmental Studies so I can go through the ceremony with friends, then once my independent environmental study project and this course was complete, I could apply for my full BScH in Environmental Sciences with a minor in economics. However, even after my fourth year ended, my mental health did not miraculously get better, in fact without support from the therapist I had throughout my final year, and being put into an unhealthy home environment I got progressively worse. I could barley finish my independent study, and my physical and mental health declined. At this point, I was barley getting by with my depression and anxiety, and still had no tools to handle my ADHD. I had to concentrate on getting out of an unhealthy living situation and make money to support myself. This is what I have been doing for the past couple years working constantly trying to insure I never revisit the dark place I was in my final year of university. I loved learning, I loved school, and when I left my final year I was adamant I would complete ECON 222 and the pain of that year would not be immortalized on my transcript. Yet, working full time and not being able to move back to Kingston to complete this course, or afford completing it has meant I haven’t been able to do so.
At this point, I hope to just finally apply to graduate with my BScH in Environmental Sciences, without my minor and finally move on with my life. However, seeing an F on my transcript for a situation that was so out of my control, that I tried so hard to resolve but simply did not have the tools, time, or setting to do so feels horrible and unfair. I feel like I owe it to the person who worked so hard to overcome the horrible mental health battles I faced over my undergraduate degree, that an F that doesn’t describe my comprehension or work ethic in a course that I effectively dropped near the start of the semester is removed from my transcript. Furthermore, I simply thought that I would have AG standing, or something similar. I just wanted to feel better, and I wasn’t thinking that I would ever have an F as my final grade for this course. Over the past two years I have relieved much of my depression and anxiety, yet I still haven’t been able to cope with my ADHD. I have tried more therapy, which I could not afford, and now I take medication which hasn’t solved my ADHD symptoms at all. This course in specific and even thinking of this time in my life has caused so much anxiety which is why it has been put off this long. However, I hope to open a new chapter of my life soon, and I want to be able to close this chapter without a pang of dread and anxiety even thinking about it. I am comfortable with describing in more detail how my mental health has interfered in my completing this appeal, the course, or even applying for graduation. My desire is that I can remove ECON 222 off my transcript and graduate without my economic minor, and instead have my BScH in Environmental Sciences.
Kind regards,
Anisha Chaudhary
