Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am writing to request credit standing for BCHM 315, which I completed in the fall 2024 term. While I achieved a final grade of B-, I believe the grade does not fully reflect my potential due to significant personal circumstances that impacted my ability to perform at my usual academic level.
At the beginning of this year, I came out as bisexual to my housemates. One of my housemates, who had previously been my best friend, did not respond kindly to this, which led to the deterioration of our friendship and our house life.
This was really challenging for me, and for the first time in my life, I experienced depression. Initially, my anxiety became so overwhelming that I struggled to leave my house to attend my lectures, and even go the gym, something I have always enjoyed. I wasn’t eating, and I spent days isolated in my room.
The toxic environment in my house further worsened my mental health, leading me to frequently go home throughout the semester. This negatively affected my attendance and participation in lectures for this course. My other courses were either fully online, allowing me to complete them from my home in Toronto, or they were mandatory lab-based classes that were one day a week on monday and friday which I would commute to school for.
However, for BCHM 315, the three weekly in-person lectures made it more difficult for me to stay on top of coursework and attend sessions regularly. In November, I sought professional help and reached out to my doctor, who prescribed medication and recommended that I speak with a cognitive behavioral therapist, which I arranged through the campus wellness clinic. Since starting treatment and taking time to focus on my recovery, I have made great progress in managing my mental health.
By the time I realized that I could no longer remain in Kingston for my well-being, the drop date for this course had already passed. I initially took this course as part of my pursuit of a life sciences specialization, but since then, I have reconsidered this path due to the ongoing challenges I've experienced in Kingston. The negative associations with my environment and the difficulty of maintaining my mental health here have made it clear that continuing in this specialization is not a sustainable option for me at this time.
Given these extenuating circumstances, I’m requesting credit standing for this course. Thank you for considering my request.
Sincerely,
Ethan
