Petition Letter: Petition for Late Course Drop: PHIL115

Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing to formally request a late course drop for PHIL 115 due to extenuating circumstances that have significantly hindered my ability to complete the course effectively. During my first year, I struggled with severe mental health problems with ADHD, anxiety, and depression. These mental challenges were enhanced by marijuana substance abuse issues in an act of coping, which severely impacted on my ability to maintain daily routines, motivation to focus on school, and apply myself academically. I have a physical letter from my professional doctor as a supporting document that describes the severity of my condition and how it interfered with my ability to engage with my education.

During this time, I was overwhelmed and unable to acknowledge the full extent of my struggles, making it impossible to act with my submission of this petition. My mental health issues weren't minor experiences, but rather a suicidal reality that persisted since high school and influenced various aspects of my life. I was unable to function, and was unable to advocate for my academic needs. It's difficult to express and covey how lost and hopeless I felt during that time, as everyday was a personal burden against my emotions and my education felt like an unattainable goal.

I am not the same person I was during that time. Over the past year, I have taken significant steps to address my mental health. I had met with my counsellor/therapist bi-weekly and learning to rebuild healthy academic routines by attending classes and using campus resources such as QSAS. This experience has not been comfortable, but it has been necessary and the differences I have made is evident in my academic progress. I have since dedicated myself to improving my grades and successfully completing the necessary courses to complete my degree to stay on track. Requesting this late drop is essential in allowing me to move forward without carrying the weight of mental circumstances beyond my control.
