Petition Letter: Dear Academic Appeals Committee,

I am writing to formally petition for the removal of my grade in KNPE 255 due to extenuating medical and personal circumstances that significantly impacted my ability to attend and perform in the course. I have attached supporting documentation, including a medical note, to substantiate my request.

In 2021, I was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury following a hit-and-run accident, requiring ongoing medical management. In 2023, I was prescribed Teva Carbamazepine, a medication that necessitated the use of birth control due to potential pregnancy-related risks. Despite following medical precautions, in March 2024, I unexpectedly discovered I was pregnant. After receiving an inconclusive home pregnancy test result, I visited Student Wellness Services, where my pregnancy was confirmed (as outlined in my supporting documentation). I was advised to schedule an ultrasound at the earliest available appointment, which was set for March 18 at 12:00 PM at Hotel Dieu Hospital.

Unfortunately, this appointment conflicted with my KNPE 255 midterm (scheduled from 8:30–10:00 AM, with an extended time accommodation until 11:30 AM), leaving me with an impractically short window to attend my medical appointment. In addition, I experienced severe morning sickness and debilitating migraines due to the pregnancy, making it increasingly difficult to focus on coursework, attend classes, and adequately prepare for the exam. The emotional distress of an unexpected pregnancy despite medical precautions further compounded these challenges, affecting my concentration and academic performance.

On the morning of March 18, I attempted to write my midterm despite feeling physically unwell and emotionally overwhelmed. Prior to the exam, I informed my professor, Dr. Robert Ross, of my circumstances, explaining that I was experiencing severe illness and distress and that I would be submitting an extenuating circumstances form alongside my QSAS accommodations request for an extension.
