Petition Letter: My name is Yingbo Sun (Student #20277746), and I am a senior student majoring in Computer Science, specializing in Game Development. I am writing to formally request an exception to the current Letter of Permission (LOP) policy to allow me to take additional off-campus summer courses due to significant financial hardship.
My situation is somewhat unique and challenging. I come from a single-parent household, as my father tragically passed away in a car accident before my birth. Since then, my mother has single-handedly supported my education. Given our family's limited financial resources, each academic year I strive to minimize the number of courses taken to reduce tuition costs. However, the current policy restricting additional off-campus course enrollment is placing immense financial and psychological stress on me.
Currently, I have completed all my required courses and have only nine elective courses left for graduation. The tuition fee for summer courses at Queen's University is considerably higher—nearly double or triple—than those offered by external institutions. Allowing me to take additional off-campus courses this summer would greatly relieve my family's financial burden, enable me to graduate on time next year, and support my academic goals.
Furthermore, as an international student, the potential delay in graduation could severely affect my graduate school applications to Computer Science or Electrical and Computer Engineering programs at Queen's University and Western University. Graduate applications require timely recommendation letters, and delayed graduation would invalidate these recommendations, forcing me to retake courses and bear an additional tuition burden exceeding CAD $5,000.
Given my family background—a single-parent household since my father's passing due to a car accident before my birth—this financial burden is particularly challenging. Allowing me to enroll in off-campus summer courses would substantially alleviate this hardship and enable me to graduate as planned.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: If approved, I will complete 3 courses at an off-campus institution and take 6 courses at Queen’s in Fall 2025 to fulfill graduation requirements. At the same time, I will apply for graduate admission in Fall 2026.
