Subject: Petition for Increased Course Load on an International Letter of Permission (ILOP)
Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to formally petition for permission to enrol in four courses (instead of the standard two) while studying at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) during the Winter 2026 term. I am currently in good academic standing and believe that taking these additional courses presents an exceptional academic opportunity that aligns with my long-term goals of becoming a doctor.
The courses I wish to take include:
Inequality, Poverty, and Globalization – This course will provide me with a deeper understanding of global health disparities and socio-economic factors that contribute to healthcare inequities. As a future doctor, comprehending these global issues will help me serve diverse communities more effectively.
Intercultural Communication – Effective communication is a cornerstone of medical practice, especially when treating patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. This course will enhance my ability to interact with individuals from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds, a critical skill in the medical field.
People Management – Leadership and teamwork are essential skills for a medical professional. This course will allow me to develop strong management and collaboration skills, which are crucial when working within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
Spanish Architecture History – While this course may not seem directly related to medicine, it will immerse me in Spanish culture, helping me gain a broader perspective on history and society. Additionally, understanding cultural heritage creates empathy and adaptability—traits that are vital for a compassionate healthcare provider.
These courses will fulfill my degree requirements by counting towards my elective credits, which I have researched and spoken with the IPO in regard to transfer credits. Studying these subjects in an international setting will provide invaluable real-world insights and cultural perspectives that cannot be fully replicated in a domestic classroom. Engaging with the topics of poverty and globalization, intercultural communication, and people management, while immersed in a different cultural environment will deepen my understanding of global challenges and diverse healthcare needs. Additionally, exploring Spanish architectural history firsthand will enrich my cultural appreciation and adaptability, which are essential traits for a future medical professional working in diverse communities. Studying at UAB offers an unparalleled academic and personal growth opportunity. Being immersed in a different culture will strengthen my language skills and deepen my understanding of global diversity, both of which are invaluable in a medical career. By taking the initiative to enrol in additional courses, I am demonstrating my commitment to expanding my academic and cultural knowledge in ways that will support my future as a physician.

Academic Plan: In the event that my petition is granted, I am confident that I will successfully manage the 4-course, equivalent to 12.0 credit load while studying abroad at UAB. To achieve academic success, I plan to implement a structured approach to my studies, including diligent time management, early preparation for assignments and exams, and regular check-ins with professors and academic advisors. While studying abroad, I understand the importance of balancing academics with cultural immersion, and I will prioritize maintaining a steady work-life balance. In the case of any unforeseen challenges, I will utilize available resources such as the university’s academic support services and stay in regular communication with my professors to ensure I stay on track. I am committed to maximizing this unique academic opportunity and believe this approach will help me succeed in this demanding academic setting. Furthermore, my ultimate goal is to attend medical school, and this experience will enrich my education by providing me with a deeper understanding of global health disparities, intercultural communication, and effective people management, skills that are critical in the medical field. I am excited for this opportunity and to bring and use my knowledge back at Queen's in the Life Sciences program.
