Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to respectfully request academic consideration due to ongoing extenuating personal circumstances that have had a significant and sustained impact on my academic performance, beginning last year and continuing into the current semester.
Over the past year, my father has been experiencing serious and unresolved health issues. He has been referred to multiple specialists, each offering different and often conflicting diagnoses. This has resulted in a great deal of confusion and anxiety within my family. While my parents initially tried to keep the extent of the situation from me in order to allow me to focus on my studies, I eventually found out—and when I did, it hit me very hard. The emotional weight of not being at home to support my family or know exactly what was happening made it difficult to concentrate in class, prepare for exams, or complete assignments effectively.
Being away for school during such a stressful time only amplified my feelings of helplessness and isolation. I often found myself overwhelmed by anxiety, sadness, and emotional exhaustion. I began experiencing symptoms of depression and found it increasingly difficult to stay on top of my academic responsibilities. The situation was not something I could easily compartmentalize or ignore. It affected my ability to attend lectures, keep up with coursework, and study for exams, even when I wanted to.
On top of my dad’s health issues, there were other family-related challenges last year that added to my stress and anxiety. While I do not feel comfortable disclosing all of the details, I believe it’s important to acknowledge that there were multiple factors contributing to a very difficult and emotionally taxing time. These events didn’t occur in isolation—they compounded one another, and over time, the emotional strain built up and began to severely impact my mental health and academic performance. The toll it took was emotional and academic, and I was simply not in the right state of mind to perform at my usual level.
I also want to note that I only recently became aware of my current academic standing and the option to submit a petition. Had I understood this process earlier, I would have acted sooner. I am taking responsibility for my academic record and trying to address this now that I have a better understanding of the situation and the steps I can take. My intention has never been to make excuses but rather to share the honest reality of what I have been going through and how it has affected my ability to succeed in school.
Although these challenges are still ongoing, I have been doing my best to take steps toward recovery and stability. I’ve been reaching out for support, learning to cope in healthier ways, and trying to manage the demands of both my personal life and academic responsibilities. While I am starting to see some improvement, it has been a slow and difficult process. I am committed to doing better, but I ask for understanding during this period of transition and recovery.
I take my academic work seriously and have always aimed to perform to the best of my ability. The grades I have received during this time do not reflect my potential, effort, or who I am as a student. I am confident that, given the chance and appropriate support, I can return to my usual standard and succeed moving forward.
I respectfully ask that my situation be taken into consideration when reviewing my academic record and that I be granted the opportunity to appeal the grades that were affected during this difficult time. I care deeply about my education and am fully committed to working hard and continuing to improve.
Thank you for your time, understanding, and compassion.
Sincerely,
Maria Papadogiannis
