Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I’m writing to formally request Credit standing (CR) for MATH 280 and STAT 268 from the [Fall 2024] term, under Queen’s academic consideration policy.
During the final stretch of the term, my family and my mental health were going through a deeply difficult and destabilizing time. While I’m not comfortable sharing all the details over an online form, it involved a serious and private family breakdown that had a direct impact on me, both emotionally and logistically. I had to take on responsibilities at home and navigate a situation that was emotionally charged, time-consuming, and entirely beyond my control. Adding the fact that the examinations were at the beginning of the exam term, with me having to write 2 exams - ECON 255 and MATH 280 in a 12-hour timeframe and three exams in 5 days.
As someone who has tried to stay resilient and academically committed throughout my time at Queen’s — particularly in a demanding Math and Economics double major — I did my best to manage the situation without compromising my studies. But by the end of the term, I wasn’t able to perform at the level I normally would, especially in STAT 268 and MATH 280, and it shows in my final grade, as I was able to complete the homework at a much better level than the examinations of the course. This was an aberration, as my performance in other quantitative courses is significantly better.
I didn’t pursue a doctor’s note or formal accommodation at the time, partly because I didn’t know how to frame something that felt too personal and non-medical, and partly because I thought I could still power through. In hindsight, I should have reached out earlier. I’m now asking for a CR designation to reflect the fact that this grade does not represent my academic ability, only the circumstances I was in. Specifically in MATH 280, I had even made attempts to go to office hours, and had severe anxiety and stress stemming from personal battles I was unfortunately dealing with. I've even attended counselling at Queen's in the winter semester to confront some of these personal battles.
