Petition Letter: I experienced the sudden loss of a close family member on Saturday April 19th. This unforeseen and tragic circumstance shook me and my family. I was in the midst of studying for my STAT 269 exam scheduled for Monday April 21st when I learnt of the unexpected loss of my uncle. As soon as I heard the news, I was extremely shaken up and emotional. Knowing that my exam was coming up very soon, I tried to continue studying but had a very difficult time. Having lost someone that meant so much to me so suddenly, I felt like nothing else mattered, my world had been torn apart, and all I could think about was losing him. I felt waves of emotions, anger, sadness, crying, all together. No matter what I tried to reset, taking to my friends and family, going on walks, taking a shower, I couldn’t focus to study. When I was trying to study I felt like nothing was sticking and I couldn’t retain any of the information I was reviewing. On top of that, when attempting practice problems I had previously been able to complete, I was drawing a blank and was forgetting things I knew that I knew. After reaching out to the Statistics Department, my STAT 269 professor and my therapist, I decided that I was not in a condition where I would be able to perform academically and that attempting to write the exam despite my circumstances would only cause further stress given my inability to concentrate or use the information that I have. I would like to apply for a late drop for the STAT 269 course, as I believe this is the most reasonable and considerate option given the emotional and mental toll this loss has taken on me, and my inability to perform to the best of my academic ability under these circumstances.
