Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean Stephenson,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to respectfully request approval to drop three courses from my academic record: KNPE 227, KNPE 254, and ANAT 316. I understand that this request falls outside the regular drop period, and I truly appreciate your time and consideration.

In June 2023, I was diagnosed with a health condition that significantly affected my academic performance. Since September, I have been actively engaged in treatment with a healthcare professional. This condition has impacted my ability to attend classes consistently, focus, participate in group work, meet deadlines, and complete assessments.

To manage these challenges, I sought support from Queen’s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) and have been receiving accommodations that have helped me better navigate my academic responsibilities. I’ve also worked closely with my academic advisor, Vanessa McCourt, whose ongoing guidance has been instrumental during this time.

As part of my efforts to get back on track, I made the decision to transfer from the Kinesiology program to Health Studies. This change reflects both my academic strengths and personal interests. Since the transition, I’ve experienced a marked improvement in my academic performance during the 2024–2025 academic year. The courses I am requesting to drop fall outside my new program of study and do not reflect my current academic capabilities or the positive progress I’ve made.

Beyond academics, I remain committed to the Queen’s community. I’ve been actively involved in Step Above Stigma, a mental health advocacy club, which has deepened my passion for supporting others facing similar challenges and reaffirmed my desire to contribute meaningfully to the university.

I fully respect Queen’s academic expectations and take responsibility for the circumstances that brought me here. I believe that allowing me to drop KNPE 227, KNPE 254, and ANAT 316 would reflect a fair and accurate assessment of my academic path and would support my continued success moving forward.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Takunda Govere (20290426)
