Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Ravneet Mall, and I am writing to respectfully request the removal of the failed grades I received during the Winter 2024 and Summer 2024 academic terms due to extenuating medical and personal circumstances.
I am a first-generation university student who has worked diligently to overcome significant challenges throughout my academic journey. I was formally diagnosed with anxiety and depression in 2018 and have consistently sought to manage these conditions while pursuing my education. Despite my efforts, my mental health deteriorated during the 2023–2024 academic year.
In Fall 2023, I experienced a severe panic attack that led to fainting, marking a critical point in my mental and physical health struggles. Throughout Winter 2024, my symptoms worsened significantly. I struggled with profound emotional instability, exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, and overwhelming anxiety, all of which were compounded by disrupted sleep patterns and poor diet, further impacting my academic performance and daily functioning.
In March 2024, I sought further medical evaluation and was formally diagnosed with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). I began treatment with Prozac shortly thereafter. Although treatment marked an important step forward, the adjustment period was challenging, and my symptoms remained at an all-time high through the Spring and into the Fall 2024 term.
The following courses were directly impacted during this time:
Winter 2024: IDIS 273, RELS 223, PSYC 236, GLPH 281
Summer 2024: CISC 181
Due to the severity of my symptoms, I was unable to withdraw or seek accommodations during these semesters proactively. However, I have since made meaningful progress. I successfully completed a full course load during the 2024–2025 academic year, enrolling in 5 courses during the Fall semester and 6 courses during the Winter semester. This reflects the stability and support system I have since put in place through ongoing therapy, medical treatment, and personal lifestyle improvements.
I am proud to share that I am graduating this year, but with a general degree, and having these grades appealed will help me receive an honours degree. I also have secured a job opportunity that I am excited to pursue. Post-graduation and having these failed grades removed would allow my transcript to more accurately reflect my academic ability, resilience, and the significant progress I have made. It would also greatly support my transition into this next chapter of my academic and professional journey.
I have attached supporting documentation from my healthcare providers to verify the timeline and severity of my circumstances. I respectfully ask for your understanding and consideration in allowing the removal of these failed grades from my academic record.
