Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Note: I have previously submitted a CR request, but it appeared to timeout and I didn't receive a confirmation page or email. I apologize for any redundancy.

Due to the strike, PSYC 331, which was taught by a TF, was the most adversely affected course in my winter term. We lost the ability to connect with our entire teaching team from March 10th through the remainder of the winter term, leaving us teaching ourselves a 3rd year course. Our course was heavily back-weighted and to work around this, we were informed that a substantial re-weighting would be implemented to provide students with final grades. For me, this meant that my mid-term was re-weighted to a ridiculous 90%, as I didn't submit the essay.

My reasons for not submitting the essay were that I was had a 3-week battle with COVID—while parenting two young children— that started shortly before the strike. I came back and began catching up on 3 weeks worth of course work, and by the time we lost contact with our teaching team, I had important questions surrounding the essay went unanswered. I hoped that the strike would resolve, and we were informed by the TF that she would give us a new deadline once she was back to work. Unfortunately, neither of these came to pass.

With the disruption in our course and the questionable re-weighting, I'm now facing an extremely low, but passing grade in PSYC 331, which would negatively impact my GPA and tarnish what is currently a solid transcript with a GPA around 3.7. A CR, which will be accompanied by an asterisk that Queen's has graciously provided, would show that this course was indeed an easily explained anomaly in my university career and wouldn't impede any applications for further academic pursuits.
