Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to respectfully petition for late enrollment in DEVS 102 with Professor Paritosh Kumar, following the passage of the course add deadline.
Over the past several weeks, my family and I have been navigating a deeply stressful period due to an ongoing legal dispute involving our small family business. Two weeks ago, we were informed that the opposing party has refused to settle, placing our company—already under significant financial strain—at serious risk. I’ve worked both part-time and full-time for this business for years, and the situation has demanded my full attention recently.
Since the end of exam season, I’ve been involved in numerous legal meetings and frequent, lengthy commutes between Kingston and Calgary, where the company is based. Our business manufactures steel waste containers, and in light of recent U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, I’ve also been active in maintaining critical client relationships as a sales representative. Just last week, my colleagues and I had to travel to Nevada to reassure some of our largest customers and prevent potential fallout from the tariffs.
Given these circumstances, I missed the academic deadline to add a course. I recently realized that I am currently enrolled in a 6-credit ENGL 100 course—more credits and cost than I need to fulfill my final degree requirement. Upon discovering this while reviewing tuition fees, I immediately reached out to an academic advisor and then contacted Professor Kumar regarding potential enrollment in his course. I had the pleasure of taking his POLS 445 class in Fall 2024, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and I would be honoured to take another course under his instruction.
These challenges are ongoing, and I am continuing to work with a therapist to manage the mental and emotional toll. While I understand the importance of meeting deadlines, these events were unforeseeable and have required daily problem-solving on both a personal and professional level.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I hope you will understand my situation and grant this request.
Sincerely,
Edward Haag

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Academic Plan for Success
Going forward, I am committed to maintaining regular sessions with my psychiatrist, who has been essential in helping me manage my mental health, including time management and coping strategies during high-stress situations. These sessions will continue to provide me with the structure and support I need to succeed academically.
I will remain in Kingston to fulfill both academic and personal responsibilities while continuing to work remotely for my family business in a reduced capacity. This will allow me to stay engaged professionally without compromising my academic focus. Given the unpredictable nature of the recent extenuating circumstances, I have discussed with my psychiatrist strategies to set clearer boundaries around my work obligations, ensuring I prioritize my studies in the coming term.
My primary academic goal is to graduate. Although I am currently enrolled in a 6.0-unit English course that would allow me to meet this requirement, the course exceeds the number of units I need and comes with significantly higher tuition. I am requesting to substitute this with DEVS 102, a 3.0-unit course that better aligns with both my financial situation and academic plan. I also have prior experience with Professor Paritosh Kumar, having taken his POLS 445 course, and I found his teaching style supportive and intellectually engaging. I am confident that this familiarity will help ease the academic transition and allow me to focus fully on the course material.
I have also consulted with an academic advisor regarding this plan to ensure that DEVS 102 meets the requirements for my degree and that I will remain on track to graduate this year. I will continue to use academic resources available through the university, including office hours, advising support, and academic accommodations if necessary.
By taking proactive steps to manage my health, adjust my workload, and select a course with a professor I know and trust, I am confident in my ability to succeed academically and complete my degree requirements.
