Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jenn Stephonson,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to formally request academic consideration regarding my 2024 - 2025 academic standing. Specifically, i am petitioning for:

A waiver of the RTW1(Required to Withdraw 1) status
A late drop for MATH 121 and BIOL 103
Credit standing for BIOL 102

During my first year at Queen’s University, I experienced significant personal challenges that deeply affected my mental health and academic performance. At the start of the school year, I had found out that my long term girlfriend had been unfaithful. which initially felt like a small emotional setback quickly escalated into a depressive episode, and I failed to anticipate the effect this would have on my ability to focus, stay motivated, and keep up with my coursework.

As my mental health gradually worsened I began using substances to cope, which was a decision that only worsened my condition and academic standing. I found it increasingly difficult to engage with lectures, complete assignments, or study effectively for midterms and finals. This spiral affected the majority of my courses, especially in the fall and early winter terms.

During the last three months of the academic year, I began taking active steps towards recovery. My mental health began to improve, I discontinued all substance use, and I noticed gradual improvements in my academic performance. Unfortunately, by that time it was too late to meaningfully impact my cumulative GPA.

While this past year does not reflect my true academic potential, I have always been a hardworking and committed student. In high school, I was consistently recognized for academic achievement and dedication. This year was an anomaly in my academic journey, and I am determined to return to the level of performance I know I am capable of.

Additionally, I will be submitting a letter of support from my sister, who has been closely involved in my situation and can speak to my efforts and progress.
I am respectfully asking for a second chance to continue my studies at Queen’s, and for the opportunity to demonstrate my commitment to academic success with a clearer mind and stronger support systems in place.
Thank you for considering my petition. I would be grateful for the opportunity to move forward in my academic journey.

Sincerely,
Sihaimo Benimarc Kouassi

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: This summer, I am focusing on rebuilding my well-being and academic discipline. I've committed to regular physical activity to support my mental health, and complete sobriety. Looking ahead to my second year at Queen’s, I plan on creating structured weekly schedules for the academic year, seeking help early from professors, peers, and tutors(Peer mentor Program, ASUS Peer Tutoring), and securing part-time work in Kingston to maintain structure in my daily life. Studies show that academic performance improves significantly when students have a consistent schedule, support systems, and mental wellness strategies in place, and that is what I’m building over the next few months.

Since the beginning of high school, I have dreamed of becoming a psychiatrist. This goal continues to motivate me, and I am ready to work as hard as I can to achieve it. I am prepared to retake any necessary courses, such as MATH 121and BIOL 103, and enroll in summer classes in future years at Queen’s to recover credits and stay on track academically.
