Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am writing to formally request a late drop for MATH 121 and CHEM 112 (Fall/Winter 2024–25) due to extenuating circumstances that significantly impacted my academic performance, particularly during the Winter 2025 semester. These circumstances, which were beyond my control, involved a serious deterioration in my mental health following a traumatic personal event that occured immediately before the start of the Winter term.
As a student registered with Queen’s Student Accessibility Services due to diagnosed mental health conditions including anxiety and ADHD, I already faced ongoing academic challenges. However, the aforementioned personal event triggered a significant mental health crisis that went beyond my existing conditions. The impact left me overwhelmed and unable to manage daily academic demands. In response, I sought support from Queen’s Student Wellness Services counselors, and I was aided in deciding to take a two week leave from academics, in hopes of improving my mental health.
Despite these efforts, the psychological challenge of the incident continued to affect my ability to complete coursework and attend lectures and tutorials. I experienced intense exhaustion, cognitive fatigue, and short-term memory lapses, all making it incredibly challenging to manage deadlines and stay engaged with my courses. While I tried to fully engage in my studies after my two week break, I found it extremely difficult to catch up and perform as if I were not still mentally and emotionally affected - leading me to continue to fall behind.
These challenges had a particularly strong impact on MATH 121 and CHEM 112, two academically demanding full-year courses. The cumulative stress and mental difficulties caused me to fall behind in lectures, miss tutorials, and miss assignments in both courses. This pattern persisted throughout the Winter semester, and I was ultimately unable to meet the academic requirements to pass these courses.
Given the severity and timing of these extenuating circumstances, I respectfully request a late drop for MATH 121 and CHEM 112 from my academic transcript. This event and its prolonged psychological effects were not only disruptive to my academic progress but were also beyond my control.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Saia Brickley
