Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to respectfully clarify my academic record and request reconsideration of the recent notification regarding a three-year withdrawal.
In your letter dated June 17, 2024, you kindly approved my return to part-time studies, conditional on completing 24.0 non-repeated credit units and achieving a GPA of 1.90, starting from when I was placed on part-time status. I’m sincerely grateful for the opportunity and trust you placed in me.
Since then, I have been committed to improvement, and the cumulative GPA for my non-repeated part-time courses has risen above 1.90, meeting the standard you set. I understand that my overall cumulative GPA remains below 1.60, which may have triggered an automatic withdrawal under Regulation 13.4. However, I believe this does not reflect the academic progress I’ve made based on the personalized expectations you outlined.
I would also like to clarify the situation with MATH 126. I originally registered in my first year, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I took a gap year and submitted the request after the drop deadline. This resulted in an “NG” grade. If this course is excluded from the 24.0-unit count, I have not yet reached the credit threshold. However, I am currently taking three Summer 2025 courses and working hard to succeed.
Although I had regained academic stability by Summer 2024, my emotional state declined sharply that fall after losing my grandmother, the family member I was closest to—and someone I felt personally responsible for. She was the third close relative I lost in 2024. Around the same time, my mother became partially paralyzed due to a spine-related condition worsened by the physical strain of caring for my grandmother. These overlapping events led to a serious emotional collapse, causing severe psychological distress and insomnia that negatively impacted my studies.
Since then, I’ve been receiving weekly care from both a psychologist and sleep specialist at the Student Wellness Centre, which has helped me regain stability. I’ve also remained focused on my coursework throughout the summer and am committed to sustaining this recovery.
Given these circumstances, I respectfully ask that the withdrawal decision be reconsidered or postponed until my Summer 2025 results are available and my progress can be more accurately assessed in light of your original expectations.
Thank you very much for your previous understanding and for taking the time to consider my request.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: 1. Course of Study
In Summer 2025, I am enrolled in the following three courses:
COMM 211 – Financial Accounting
COMM 221 – Introduction to Finance
MATH 225 – Ordinary Differential Equations
These courses are selected as part of my long-term academic goal of completing an Economics degree. I have chosen a combination of quantitative and finance-related courses that align with my strengths and interests.
Starting Fall 2025, I plan to return to full-time status, taking 4–5 courses per term. Now that my mental and emotional health is more stable, I believe I can handle a full-time load responsibly and productively. I am fully committed to sustaining this progress moving forward.
In the 2025-2026 term, I intend to enroll in ECON 335, ECON225, ECON 310, ECON 320,ECON 222, and ECON 243. These include repeated courses that I am confident I can now excel in, which would significantly improve my overall GPA and demonstrate my academic progress.
2. Study Schedule and Time Commitment
I have created a weekly academic routine to ensure summer success:
Weekly Routine:
Monday–Friday mornings: Focused MATH 225 problem-solving and concept review.
Monday–Friday afternoons & evenings: Watch and annotate recorded lectures for COMM 211 & COMM 221.
Weekends: Mixed review sessions and finalization of assignments.
Every Night: Review the day's lessons and any new English words before bed.
Weekly Task Checklist:
Monday: MATH 225 Weekly Check
Thursday: MATH 225 Quiz
Saturday: COMM 221 Assignment
Sunday: COMM 211 Quiz (if applicable)
On weekends, I organize notes, revise key concepts, and reach out to instructors or TAs via OnQ or email if needed.
The courses for 2025–2026 will also be planned in a similar way. I tend to study courses that involve more calculations or problem-solving in the morning, and focus on courses that require more analysis or memorization of concepts in the afternoon.
3. Academic Supports and Strategy
I currently receive weekly therapy and sleep treatment through Queen’s Student Wellness Services, which has helped stabilize my mental health and restore focus.
I have been prescribed sleep medication that helps improve my rest, as I had been struggling with insomnia for a long time, which made it very difficult for me to function during the day last semester.
I plan to make use of SASS (Student Academic Success Services) for time management, writing support, and exam strategies.
If eligible, I will apply for peer tutoring or join small study groups for mutual academic support.
I use GoodNotes, an excellent note-taking app, to organize and review my class materials daily. I regularly open my notes on my computer to revise and cross-reference them with my course e-textbook and economics problem sets for more effective learning.
Each day, I encounter many new English terminology and subject-specific expressions. I organize these terms in GoodNotes and print them out for review. I will go over them every night before bed to reinforce my understanding and retention.
I have found a private mathematics tutor to support my learning more effectively. We have a two-hour online meeting every weekend, during which we focus on solving the problems I find challenging and addressing any questions I have.
I understand that previous failed courses have impacted my cumulative GPA. I am willing to repeat necessary courses and carefully plan my schedule to balance difficulty and performance.
4.Special Considerations:
Rent and water bills are due on the 5th of every month. Grocery shopping at Metro is done every Thursday. Yoga every Tuesday and Saturday. Communicate with psychologist Wendy every Monday.
5. Context of Past Difficulties
In 2024, I experienced a series of personal tragedies:
I lost three family members, including my grandmother, who passed away in October 2024.
My mother became paralyzed due to cervical spine damage, caused by prolonged caregiving for my grandmother.
These events caused severe emotional distress, insomnia, and burnout, severely disrupting my ability to focus and study.
6. Goals and Evaluation
I aim to complete my Summer 2025 courses with strong results and return to full-time status in Fall 2025. Once my cumulative GPA reaches 1.90, I plan to formally enter the Economics program.
I will continue to monitor my GPA each term, consult with Academic Advisors, and meet all degree requirements.
My target is to reach a cumulative GPA of 2.90+ and regain Good Academic Standing by the end of the 2025–2026 academic year.

The medication has now been confirmed to be fully effective, as it has significantly alleviated my emotional distress and resolved my severe insomnia, allowing me to study normally. Currently achieving good grades in all three subjects.
(Previously, the severe insomnia caused by the loss of a family member had significantly affected both my daytime learning efficiency and overall life rhythm, but the issue has now been resolved.)
