Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Maxime Dalat (student ID: 20334352), and I am writing to respectfully request a Credit (C.R.) notation for ECON 110, a 6-unit course that runs over both the Fall and Winter terms. I am specifically requesting the C.R. to apply to the full 6 units. Additionally, I am asking that the deadline to petition for this change be waived, as I was dealing with significant personal hardship during the eligible window and was unable to take action at the time.

When I enrolled in ECON 110, I was genuinely eager to learn more about global economic systems as I explored possible academic pathways. However, that academic year quickly became one of the most emotionally difficult periods of my life. On October 29, 2022, my grandmother, Stella Roy—my only living grandparent and someone I was deeply close to—passed away from health complications. I was devastated by her passing, and not long after, my 8-year-old dog, Fitch, also passed away. These two losses within such a short period left me overwhelmed with grief and severely impacted my ability to focus on schoolwork. I ended up withdrawing from my Italian language course and struggled to stay afloat in ECON 110.

Shortly after, my uncle, Pierre Lévesque, who was like a father figure to me, became critically ill. He passed away in May 2023, compounding the grief I was already carrying. Throughout this time, I was navigating a deep depression that made even getting out of bed a challenge. Schoolwork and grades were the last things on my mind, and although I tried to persevere, my performance suffered significantly.

During Fall 2023—the term in which I still could have submitted a C.R. petition—my father suffered two strokes. I was juggling full-time studies, working long hours to support myself, and continuing to grieve multiple losses. I simply was not in a position, mentally or emotionally, to handle administrative processes like petitioning for the C.R. notation.

Now, as I prepare to apply for graduate school, I realize just how significantly this one course has impacted my academic record. Had I been in a better place to make this request earlier, I would have, without hesitation. I am therefore asking that the deadline to petition for a C.R. be waived, so that I may retroactively replace the grade for ECON 110 with a Credit notation for the full 6 units.

Please let me know if any further documentation or information is needed to support this request. I truly appreciate your time, understanding, and consideration.

Sincerely,
Maxime Dalat
