Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am writing to formally request a late course drop for the following courses in which I was enrolled during the Winter 2024 term: PSYCH 354 and PSYCH 320.

In October 2023, I was diagnosed with depression, and I began treatment with antidepressants. Despite trying several medications, my symptoms persisted, and in December 2023, I was prescribed a new medication that showed minimal improvement. In February 2024, my treatment was adjusted again, but unfortunately, by the time I was beginning to stabilize, I experienced a significant personal setback. In March 2024, my relationship came to an end.

This event, coupled with the ongoing challenges of my mental health, led to a period of emotional distress where I struggled to focus, eat, study, or effectively cope. I was unable to engage in academic activities for roughly two weeks, which severely impacted my ability to prepare for exams and complete coursework. During this time, I was fortunate to have the support of my father, who came to stay with me and help me gradually begin to recover. However, the disruption to my mental health, coupled with the tight timelines of the semester, ultimately affected my academic performance, and I was unable to perform to the level of my usual capabilities.

I would like to emphasize that the grades I received in PSYCH 354 and PSYCH 320 do not reflect my true academic abilities. I have always been committed to my studies, and I believe that under normal circumstances, my performance would have been in line with my prior academic history.

Given these extenuating circumstances, I am requesting that you consider my petition for a late course drop to mitigate the impact this semester’s challenges have had on my academic record.

My father can be reached on his cellphone at 705-498-1794. Additionally, I am willing to provide a consent and authorization for Dr. Mah upon request.

I had been getting the assistance of Killian May, a family friend and lawyer. He is going to be emailing Associate Director Haley Everson regarding the delay in submitting this application.
