Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing to respectfully request a waiver of the one-year requirement for courses that I had taken in Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 semesters.

It has taken me this long to appeal this deadline due to a string of long-standing personal matters, the most significant of which have been my mental health. It all started while I was doing these classes and have continued to affect me over the years since.

Following Winter 2022, I reached a profound level of disconnection from both my personal goals and my academic aspirations. I struggled deeply with focus and motivation and withdrew from nearly all aspects of my life. I became isolated, disengaged from my education, and did not seek support or take any action regarding my academic standing. At that time, I was not emotionally or mentally prepared to advocate for myself or take steps toward academic recovery.

This continued until April 2024, when I made the decision to return to school. Living with my grandparents, they always wanted what was best for me and wanted me to look into going back to school. I agreed and wanted to make them proud, as well as try to take control of my life rather than it constantly taking control of me.

Between April 2024 and May 2025, I continued to avoid and hide away from seeking academic advising due to anxiety and fear of being judged over my transcript even though now I know they have the best interests of any student. I wrongly assumed that my only option was to retake classes and work harder, rather than addressing the underlying issues that had affected my performance. I put all my effort into new courses, hoping that sheer determination would repair my academic record.

It wasn't until May 2025 that I finally had contacted an academic advisor. We looked over my transcript and explained the petitioning process to me in entirety. That call made me see that I could still get help and proceed further to correct things in the past. But even after getting advice, it was difficult for me to go to the next step. I am not exactly sure if it is anxiety and or my constant over-thinking about how this petition may go but I have to force myself to write this. As I know if I don't write this I will continue to make excuses and eventually start to panic from the built up stress due to not writing the petition.

I understand that this appeal is late, and I take sole responsibility for the delay. I am not trying to excuse the delay, but I try to explain it in a way that best illustrates just how much this process means to me. I am very committed to my education now and am going out of my way to catch up, both academically and mentally. Having this waiver would be an important step towards allowing me to resume fixing my academic progress.

Thank you ever so much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Jordan Yates
