Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am submitting this petition to request an extension of my exam deferrals for CHEM 281 and HLTH 101. Despite my best efforts to prepare, I have been unable to complete these exams due to health circumstances beyond my control.
I live with an autoimmune condition (ankylosing spondylitis) and take immunosuppressant medication, which makes me more vulnerable to severe and prolonged infections. Over the past six weeks, I have experienced a flare-up of my condition along with multiple recurring infections — including a UTI, an ear infection, and oral thrush linked to back-to-back antibiotics. Because I am immunocompromised from Humira, each illness has been more severe and slower to resolve, leaving me physically drained and unable to recover in time for the deferred exam period. Despite my best efforts to manage my health responsibly, this cycle has significantly affected my ability to keep up academically, even with deferrals in place.
Attempting the exams under these conditions would result in frequent interruptions, difficulty remaining seated, and severe pain and fatigue that would prevent me from completing them fairly.
I have been working with QSAS to address these challenges and updated my accommodation plan on August 27, 2025. My accommodations now include restroom breaks, stretch/rest breaks, permission to lie down, and one exam every other day. However, because of the timing, these accommodations were not able to be applied in time for this exam period, which further prevented me from completing the deferred exams.
Given these circumstances, I respectfully request an extension of my exam deferrals for CHEM 281 and HLTH 101 in accordance with Faculty policy, so that I may complete the exams later this term under fair and manageable conditions.
