Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Good afternoon, I am submitting this letter in order to swap classes from my PHIL 273 with PHIL 251. I have recently undergone immense stress and personal tragedy as my grandfather decided to undergo suicide via the MAID program. My grandmother has also decided to go through this process later this week. I have been in constant contact with my family during this time, and for obvious reasons, my classes have taken second priority due to this unforeseen tragedy. I understand that I am past the deadline for adding or dropping classes by two days, but PHIL 251 would be a better class for me to help ensure I stay on the journey to completing my degree, and it is this class I wish to take over PHIL 273. I was not notified of this choice that my grandparents decided to make until a week ago, and it has been extremely difficult for me and my family. More so, I live extremely far from my family and have had to deal with this alone, away from home. I have tried to stay on top of my work, but have missed a few classes due to this event. I understand this situation is unique and the importance of deadlines; however, I think it is fair to say that due to this unique situation, I do not find it unfair to be able to change my classes, as I was going through this personal family matter for the last week and a half. I understand if changes cannot be made because of missing the deadline, but I plead that changes can be made despite being two days past the deadline. I am willing to contact the instructor of PHIL 251 to ensure I am not too far behind. I also know that only two classes have been conducted since the start of the term regarding PHIL 251, and I think I can make up the extra work required in order to get a fair grade on the term and am ready to work diligently to achieve my best academic mark in all of my classes.
