Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
My name is Victoria Meffe and I am a first-year student at Queen’s University. I am petitioning to be allowed to enroll in the MATH 121 course, despite the deadline to enroll being September 15th. If I am allowed to enroll in this class, I would drop out of my current course which is MATH 120.
This is my first year at Queen’s University and I am trying my best to navigate all the newness of university life. I am in the Concurrent Education and Science program and am committed to excelling in it. Unfortunately, I suffer from an ongoing health condition (that is documented in my file, along with doctor’s letters), that gets me stuck in rituals, especially if I panic that things are going in the wrong direction. In this particular circumstance, my condition made me question and re-think whether I should keep my current course or whether I should move into the other course. I re-thought the decision over and over, so that I was sure I was making the perfect and correct choice to change courses, and at this time, I was down to the final allowable day to make a choice and that is when I reacted.
The ironic thing is that, I was online on the last day to enroll in the new class and I was within the deadline limits, however, at approximately 8 pm, the system would not allow me to sign up for the class and although I continued to try I eventually gave up as I felt I had no other choice.
As I continued on this week with my current course (MATH 120), I am finding that I am panicking because I feel the workload is just too heavy for me and the content is too hard. I have been struggling a lot with the work and find myself unable to complete certain tasks. I have a full course load right now and I really do not want to drop down to a lesser course load, if I can avoid it. By switching into course MATH 121, I believe the lesser workload and different approach of calculus (being not as theory based) will allow me to fully apply myself without feeling overexerted.
I decided to reach out to you, in a last attempt, to ask if I can please be given the opportunity to switch classes? I promise to make the most of it and give it my all. I am confident in my abilities and that I will be able to catch up and progress well in the new course.
I have 2 therapists that I work with weekly and will continue to work with, so that I am always on the path to success. I also am working with a learning strategist at Queen’s University that is helping me manage my course work and time. I am very focused and dedicated to this program, and if I am given this opportunity, I promise I will not let you down.
