Petition Letter

Petition Letter: As a second year student, I had my original complement of 5 courses planned and scheduled. However, I was not confident about one class (Introduction to Logic), and considering making a change to drop this course and substitute it with the Mythology and Religion course. As I was allowing myself more time to try out the Introduction to Logic course, I became very ill by Wednesday afternoon. When I awoke on Thursday, I was incredibly weak and feverish. Things did not improve and my parents drove 3 hours to get me and take me home. At home, I was severely fatigued and slept more than 14 hours per day, and barely had the strength to do anything more than eat or drink while I was awake. This continued until Tuesday September 16th and it wasn't until Wednesday September 17th that I returned back to Kingston. By this time, I had missed the course add date and could confidently attest to the fact that the Introduction to Logic course was not a good fit for me. I reached out to the ArtSci advisor for guidance and they encouraged me to submit a petition request.

I have reached out to the Professor of the Mythology and Religion course and they have agreed to allow me to join the class (please see email below). I know I am behind, but as a hard worker with a goo GPA, I will work hard to get myself caught up. I know this course addition will be beneficial for my overall mental health and well-being while keeping me to 5 courses and therefore on track with my degree requirements.

In conclusion, I ask that you grant me the ability to add the Mythology and Religion course into my schedule noting my extenuating circumstances during the course add/drop deadline.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: As a QSAS student, it is important for me to manage my mental health. Now that this physical illness is behind me, I find myself very worried and distracted as I await this course add decision. As such, I have been talking with my counsellor and have been implementing positive coping strategies to stay focused on the present as I successfully meet deadlines for my current classes.

Furthermore, I have been liaising with friends in the mythology and religion course so that I can stay on top of this course if and when the petition committee allows me to add this course. This is helping to proactively alleviate stress that may result if I fall behind in this new course. Lastly, The professor for this course has already graciously agreed to an extension on the first assignment.

My hope is that this course can be added to allow me to continue with 5 courses this semester, so I do not fall behind in my academic plan, as due to financial reasons I will be working full time all summer which will make it difficult for me to take a summer course.
