Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Faculty Arts and Science,

I am writing to formally appeal for the dropping of several courses from my academic transcript to raise my cumulative GPA to the graduation requirement. I hope to provide context for my academic struggles and explain why this appeal is critical to my current situation.

The courses I selected were taken during 2022 Fall and 2022 Winter term. During this period, I enrolled in a heavy load of mathematics and statistics 3-level and 4-level courses while experiencing significant psychological distress. This severely impacted my ability to perform academically, resulting in my inability to pass these courses.

Although I do not have formal medical documentation to verify my psychological state at the time, I have attached an email from January 2023 in which I communicated my mental health struggles and their impact on my studies. At that time, I also made the difficult decision to transfer from the Honours program to the General program, as I believed I would be unable to complete the Honors degree.

I did not initially apply for course removal because I hoped to improve my GPA through subsequent coursework. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, I was unable to continue my studies for three terms. It was only in September of last year that I managed to have sufficient funds to resume my education. I successfully completed my final course in 2025 Winter term, and I completed 90 Units requirement for the General degree.

However, because of the failed courses from 2021-2022, my cumulative GPA remains below the graduation requirement. On the one hand, my financial pressure makes it difficult for me to take on more courses. Additionally, the psychological challenges I faced have led to memory-related difficulties, which further undermine my confidence in achieving higher grades to improve my GPA.

After consulting with my academic advisor, I learned that submitting an appeal for dropping some courses from the transcript might be a possible pathway to raise my GPA and become eligible for graduation. I sincerely request your consideration in dropping the courses from my transcript. I urgently need a diploma to convert my internship into a full-time position and this allows me to contribute to my family’s financial situation. My employer has been consistently inquiring about the status of my diploma. Therefore, I would be immensely grateful if the faculty could provide a response at your earliest convenience.

I kindly ask for a timely response to this appeal and would be grateful for the opportunity to provide additional information or discuss my case further if needed. Thank you for your understanding and consideration.

Sincerely,

Yifan Bu(20105643)
