Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Petitions Office,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request retroactive academic consideration for STAT 263 - Introduction to Statistics, which I completed in Fall 2024. As the course ended in December 2024, I understand that I am still within the one-year timeframe for submitting such a request.

During the Fall 2024 term, I was carrying significant family responsibilities. My brother was struggling academically and personally following our mother’s passing, and during that term he began developing harmful patterns of substance use. Although he attempted to return to school in the fall, I later discovered that he had stopped attending classes and was in a much more serious situation than anyone realized.

This decline happened suddenly and escalated quickly. With no other immediate family available, I became one of his primary supports. I spent a great deal of time seeking help for him, including contacting healthcare providers, looking for psychiatric support, and coordinating with people who could assist. Trying to manage this crisis while keeping up with my coursework became overwhelming, and STAT 263 was particularly affected.

At the time, I did not have the capacity to process what was happening, let alone to understand or pursue academic consideration options. My focus was entirely on managing the situation as it unfolded. This is why I did not apply for support during the term.

My circumstances have since stabilized, and my academic performance in the subsequent semesters reflects my actual abilities when I am not dealing with a family crisis. I would greatly appreciate if the committee could review my request for STAT 263 in light of this context.
