Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: At the end of last semester, there was some confusion in my PHIL 204 class that led to my grade being significantly lower than expected. Due to the TA strike, students in this class were able to select 1 of 2 grading schemes that would either take into account a final essay submission or opt out of the essay and have the final grade re-weighted accordingly. I selected the second option and opted out of submitting the final essay as I was already pleased with my grade.

However, I assumed that the re-weighting would happen based on whether the essay was submitted or not, and I failed to notice that the professor requested an email to be sent to confirm if students chose the second option. Upon my realization that my grade was lower than anticipated, I immediately reached out to my professor to see if it could be corrected. Over the summer, I reached out several times to the professor as well as the head of the philosophy department without receiving a response.

Upon my return to Kingston at the start of the year, I met with the philosophy department head (the Prof was a PHD candidate who is no longer at Queens), who reached out to the Prof on my behalf but eventually said he could not help me.

Given that many other students in this course faced the same issue and were able to get their grades corrected, and the fact that I put a lot of effort into this course, I feel that I at least deserve to get my incorrect grade replaced with a CR.
