Petition Letter: I am writing to respectfully petition for Credit (CR) standing in PSYC 100 due to an unusual academic event that significantly affected my midyear standing.
On the date of the PSYC 100 final exam, I completed the examination in full; however, I made a serious procedural error by circling my multiple-choice answers in the exam booklet instead of bubbling them onto the Scantron sheet. This mistake occurred during the exam session itself and was not intentional. Immediately following the exam, I reported the error to the high proctor, who advised that a report would be submitted. I also contacted the course instructor and coordinator the same day to explain the situation.
As I later learned, due to course logistics and policies, only Scantron sheets are scanned and graded, and exam booklets are not identifiable once collected. As a result, my exam responses could not be assessed, which led to a failing midyear standing. I fully understand and accept the exam procedures and acknowledge that this was my responsibility.
This procedural error had a disproportionate impact on my academic performance in the course. While the error occurred during a single assessment, it resulted in the loss of credit for the entire final exam, despite my having completed the exam content and demonstrated my understanding during the course. There was no issue of academic integrity, and the situation was self-reported immediately.
The impact of this event has been significant, as the resulting midyear grade does not accurately reflect my engagement with or effort in PSYC 100. Aside from this incident, I have remained committed to completing the course requirements and continuing the course in good standing.
After receiving guidance from the Undergraduate Chair, I understand that a Petition for Credit Standing is the appropriate avenue to request discretionary consideration in cases such as this. I am therefore respectfully requesting Credit (CR) standing for PSYC 100 in recognition of the exceptional nature of this academic event and the fact that the failure resulted from a procedural mistake rather than a lack of academic ability or effort.
