Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

I am writing to request approval to drop CISC102 for the fall 2025 semester due to significant and ongoing mental health challenges which severely affected my academic performance and ability to engage with my studies.

Throughout the semester, I experienced persistent and worsening mental health difficulties which deeply affected my daily life and functioning. It worsened late September, which is around the time I picked up CISC102. I was in a near constant state of depression accompanied by severe anxiety, which affected my ability to concentrate, complete coursework, and maintain a sense of purpose in both my academic and personal life. I felt consistently helpless yet did not seek out the help I needed until exam season.

Over time, this progressed into a state of exhaustion and helplessness in which school and other aspects of life felt unimportant and overwhelming, despite my desire to succeed. I had no energy, would go days without eating, slept too little or too much, and hardly left my room. These challenges directly impacted my ability to keep up with CISC 102. As the semester progressed, I could not focus on the lecture material, or prepare for quizzes - and I couldn't even bring myself to do the weekly check-ins. While I attempted to push through on my own, my state had prevented me from engaging with the course productively, and as a result, my academic performance in this course did not accurately reflect my capability.

It was the worst during exam season, and I eventually sought out the help I needed. I consulted a doctor, who has confirmed that my symptoms do align with depression and anxiety, but in my particular case, there was a chance it could be bipolar. Due to this, I have been put on a medication which presents its negative side effects first, which affected my performance to the point where I had to defer two of my exams. Unfortunately, I sought help too late in the semester and at my lowest point, to try and avoid the academic consequences, and by the time I received the support, I was far too behind. I was unable to recover academically despite my earnestness to do so.

I wish to emphasize that I am not attempting to avoid responsibility by sending in. this petition, but rather requesting a bit of understanding and consideration of circumstances that were largely beyond my control and nearly took my life in its severity. I have learned the importance of addressing mental health concerns promptly and seeking help before they escalate to this extent, and am now getting the help I need.

Dropping CISC 102 would allow my academic record to more accurately reflect my efforts in first semester, and would give me the opportunity to focus on future success, and bringing my grades up. Now that I am getting treatment, I am committed to maintaining my mental health so it does not affect my academics as harshly as it has.

Thank you for your time, understanding, and consideration of my petition. I understand what a privilege it is to have such an option, and sincerely appreciate your willingness to review my circumstances, and for any accommodations you may be able to grant.

Sincerely,
Anchuhaa Narenthiran
