Petition Letter: I am writing to formally request academic consideration in the form of permission to write my deferred final examinations during the May deferred examination period.
During the Winter 2025–2026 term, I experienced significant medical circumstances that substantially impaired my cognitive functioning, including concentration, memory, processing speed, and executive functioning. These impairments were further affected by necessary medication adjustments as part of my treatment. I am currently under the care of a physician and working closely with my medical team, as well as Student Wellness Services, to stabilize my health and establish a sustainable academic routine for this semester. Medical documentation supporting these circumstances has been provided.
In addition to these medical challenges, I experienced the loss of both of my grandmothers within a relatively short period of time. This bereavement, combined with periods of isolation during the term, contributed to a severe depressive episode that further compromised my functional capacity. While I remained engaged academically to the best of my ability, these circumstances significantly impacted my ability to safely and effectively complete high-stakes examinations during the scheduled January exam period.
At present, I am able to cope with limited social interaction and structured activities for short periods of time; however, this does not translate to sustained cognitive performance under high-pressure examination conditions. Comprehensive, cumulative exams require prolonged concentration, rapid information processing, and mental stamina that I am not yet medically cleared to perform consistently. Attempting to do so at this stage would likely exacerbate my symptoms and prolong my recovery.
Despite these challenges, my academic engagement throughout the term has remained strong. The coursework I have completed reflects this: my current course average in CHEM 281 is approximately 78%, and my average in REPD is approximately 90%. These results demonstrate that I have been able to master course material when assessed through ongoing coursework completed under medically manageable conditions.
I was medically advised that writing multiple in-person examinations during the January examination period would not be appropriate. I understand that alternatives such as a DR or short-term accommodation may be considered; however, these options would not be medically appropriate or beneficial in my case. Writing the examinations in the immediate or near term would contradict my physician’s guidance and risk prolonging my recovery. A DR would also not accurately reflect my academic engagement or intent, as I remained actively enrolled in both courses and intend to complete all remaining academic requirements.
I communicated my medical concerns to my course instructors prior to the release of the final examination schedule to ensure transparency regarding my situation. This request is not due to a lack of preparation or commitment, but rather circumstances beyond my control that temporarily prevented me from completing the examinations as scheduled.
Deferring the examinations to the May deferred period is the most appropriate and medically supported solution. This timeline allows sufficient time for treatment stabilization, cognitive recovery, and bereavement processing while preserving the integrity of the evaluation process. I am fully prepared to comply with any reasonable conditions set by the Faculty regarding examination format, supervision, or scheduling.
I recognize the importance of academic standards and fairness, and I would not submit this petition if I believed I could reasonably complete the examinations during the January period without compromising my health. Granting this request would allow me to demonstrate my learning under conditions that are medically appropriate while remaining on track in my academic program.
