Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To the Petitions Committee,
I am writing to respectfully submit this petition to request credit standing and academic consideration for MATH 130 due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control that directly affected my performance on the final examination.
Throughout the academic term, my performance in this course was consistent and strong. Prior to the final examination period, I maintained an average of approximately 85% (A-level), reflecting my understanding of the course material and sustained engagement with the course. The difficulty arose specifically during the final examination, which did not accurately reflect my academic ability or level of preparation.
In advance of the examination period, I was in the process of arranging academic accommodation related to documented psychological challenges; GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) and ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder). I had applied for accommodations on the basis of these prior disorders with the proper supporting documentation as filled by my physician and psychologist by November 5th, with the intention of securing said accommodations prior to the final exam period. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to finalize these accommodations before the exam period began. My QSAS advisor, with whom I was required to meet in order to validate the accommodation was unavailable prior to the exam period. I was not able to secure an appointment until December 9th (meaning my accommodations would not be in affect until December 19th, after the exam period had been completed). As a result, I completed the final examination without the accommodations I was eligible to receive.
The impact of this situation was most significant during the final examination itself. On the day of the exam, I was scheduled to write two examinations, with this course being the second (PSYC 100 at 9:00am and MATH 130 at 7:00pm). The absence of accommodation, combined with exam fatigue, contributed to a heightened state of anxiety that impaired my concentration and ability to perform to my usual standard. These effects were acute and limited to the examination period, but had a direct and measurable impact on my performance.
To address and manage these circumstances, I have been engaged in regular psychotherapy, attending sessions every other week both prior to and during the examination period with a registered psychologist whom I have been seeing consistently for approximately six years. I also attempted to secure academic accommodations in advance through appropriate university channels; however, timing constraints prevented their implementation before the exams took place. Following examinations, I have continued to engage with appropriate academic and mental health supports to prevent similar challenges in the future.
I am particularly concerned about the academic consequences of this outcome, as I intend to apply to post-graduate studies following my third year of study. A final grade that does not accurately reflect my academic performance throughout the term may disproportionately affect my GPA and future academic opportunities.
I respectfully submit that the circumstances described above meet the criteria for extenuating circumstances beyond my control. While limited in duration, they were significant in impact and directly affected my performance on the final examination. I therefore ask that my petition for credit standing be given careful and compassionate consideration.
Thank you very much for your time and for reviewing my petition. I appreciate the committee's understanding and consideration of my situation.
Sincerely,
Julia Letterio
