Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Bérnard,

The reason for which I am writing this appeal is to change my grade in Stats 263 to a credit standing. As you are well aware, my shoulder has consistently affected my performance on mathematical exams, since writing intensively or any movement in general, creates unbearable pain. This inhibits my ability to perform well academically and does not allow me to reach my full potential. Prior to the commencement of the summer academic semester, I had set up several appointments with various specialists, hoping that some advancement on my injury would be made. Unfortunately the only progress that was made in regard to my injury was that it does not seem to have a proper diagnosis, it is beyond permanent chronic pain and currently remains without a solution.

I understand that trying to persevere in this manner is fruitless which is why I am in the process of transferring out of Economics and potentially into Political Science. With this injury it is not possible for me to succeed in math based courses and I would much rather be judged on my actual ability as opposed to repeatedly failing because of my injury. Constantly failing, even when it is not a reflection of my academic abilities has deeply affected my emotional well being and self esteem. This is why I have agreed to do a trial period with the department of political science for the upcoming semester. This will grant me the opportunity to take several political science courses and if I succeed in these courses, they will allow me to make the switch. Last semester, I took courses that were not math based and as a result, I did well on my exams (receiving an A on my law 201 exam) because I able to use a computer, which allowed for less strain on my shoulder.

I will do whatever it takes to succeed, as I am no stranger to adversity. I do not mind being tested to earn my place, I only ask that I not be penalized for a medical injury that I have done everything in my power to persevere through and fix for both academic and personal reasons. I am relieved to be progressing even if it is not in the direction I wanted to go in initially. It is far more desirable to change direction then to continue on what is to be a pattern of repeated failure. I have proven that I can succeed when minimally inhibited by my injury and I will continue to prove myself this semester to earn my way into political science. It is my hope that in doing so, you will allow me to minimize the impact this injury has on my future and grant me a credit standing. Should you need any more clarification or documentation, please do not hesitate to contact me as I can provide numerous doctors notes and proof of the many appointments and referrals I have received.

Thank you for all your help during this difficult time. I am confident that things will positively progress, moving forward with the switch into political science.
