Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,

I am writing to respectfully request permission to add two courses past the official course-add deadline. This petition is based on extenuating circumstances beyond my control - specifically, a significant physical illness - that directly affected my ability to manage my academic responsibilities during the relevant period.

In the days leading up to and including the course-add deadline, I experienced an acute illness that strongly affected my capacity to concentrate. During this time, my primary focus was on managing my health, and as a result, I was unable to finalize my course selections by the required deadline.

I sought care from appropriate medical professionals shortly thereafter and followed their recommendations. I am now fully recovered and cleared to continue my studies without restriction, and it is not expected to interfere with my academic performance for the remainder of the term. The steps I have taken to address this issue ensure that the circumstances that affected me during the add deadline will not recur.

I understand the importance of deadlines in maintaining academic fairness and administrative efficiency. I would not be submitting this request if the circumstances were not genuinely outside my control. I believe this situation aligns with the university’s definition of extenuating circumstances, as the illness directly caused the missed deadline and has since been responsibly and effectively addressed.
