Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academic),

My name is Nolan Du (4th-year Life Sciences, BSH/LISC). I am submitting this petition to request approval to add MICR 451 (Viral Pathogenesis) after the academic deadline.

This term, I experienced extenuating circumstances beyond my control. I also had an approved deferred-exam accommodation, and the combination of these circumstances disrupted my ability to attend to course registration and academic logistics during the first two weeks of term. The impact was primarily administrative and academic: I was unable to finalize my enrollment during the normal add window and missed early course activity during that period. These circumstances occurred during the add period and directly affected my ability to complete enrollment by the deadline.

I am now fully back on track and acting promptly to correct my registration. Importantly, I have obtained written permission from the course instructor, Professor Che Colpitts, to enroll in MICR 451 (attached). Professor Colpitts noted that I have missed one quiz, but that not all quizzes count toward the final grade, and that it should be manageable. I understand the responsibility of joining late and I am prepared to catch up immediately and meet all course expectations.

After speaking with Life Sciences advising, I understand that MICR 451 can be used to fulfill my remaining upper-year requirement (as of now DIPA program is counting within degree plan and as confirmed by Life Sciences advising). Approving this late add would allow me to remain on schedule toward my degree completion. As an international student, maintaining continuous academic progression is also important for my post-graduation plans, and I am trying to handle this situation carefully and responsibly through the proper process.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I have attached the instructor approval and my supporting documentation.

Sincerely,
Nolan Du

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: If this petition is granted, I will take the following steps to ensure academic success in MICR 451 and for the remainder of the term:

Immediate catch-up, I will review Weeks 1–2 lecture content and complete all assigned readings/notes, and I will align my study schedule to the course calendar.

I will block dedicated weekly time for MICR 451 (lecture review + reading + quiz preparation) and keep a checklist of deliverables to ensure nothing is missed.

I will proactively confirm any missed items and deadlines with the course team and follow any conditions set for late enrollment.

I will continue to use academic advising and relevant student supports as needed to stay organized, especially around deadlines and administrative requirements.

I will maintain a manageable course load and prioritize consistent attendance and timely submission to ensure successful completion of this requirement.

This plan reflects my intention to address the disruption from the early-term extenuating circumstances and to complete the course to the expected standard.
