Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Brett Hagarty, and I am a fourth-year undergrad student here at Queen¿¿s University. I am appealing to drop the courses: FILM 260, FREN P16, GPHY 103, GPHY 209 and GPHY 365 after the academic term.

I will provide you with a brief timeline of my circumstances leading up to these courses. Last summer my family had a crisis that affected my life greatly. From this crisis multiple things in my life had to change. Additionally, I had a new coach, as I played on the varsity women¿¿s volleyball team. All of these changes created a lot of stress in my life and I although I have coped well with stress in the past I did not know how to cope with this. Late in the 2014 fall semester I started experiencing anxiety and depression that prevented me from finishing GPHY 365 course. However, over the holidays I was able to regain some of my health. In the 2015 winter semester was going well until my volleyball season ended (right before reading week). After I returned from reading week my anxiety and depression was back and it affected me greatly and prevented me from finishing the courses GPHY 209 and GPHY 103. I then decided to enrol in summer courses to regain credits. However, in late June my grandmother got very sick and in early July she died. Her death prevented me from dropping and finishing the 2015 summer courses I was enrolled in Film 260 and FREN P16.

I have never experienced anything like these illnesses before and they were debilitating for me and they inhibited me from performing well in all realms of my life. However, over the summer I have confronted them and received medical treatment to help me cope in the future. I am feeling confident going into this school year that I will be able to perform well. I have also decided not to play on the varsity volleyball team this year as it took a lot of my focus away from academics and was an additional stressor to my life at Queen¿¿s.

Thank you very much for your time and thoughtful consideration.

Sincerely,

Brett Hagarty
