Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Naaman,

I am petitioning to have my grade in LAW 205 (Winter 2025) changed from a letter grade to credit standing (CR). Unfortunately, during the winter semester of 2025, I was struggling with mental health issues. These mental health issues severely influenced my motivation to do school work, ultimately impacting my grades and my overall academic performance. I began noticing my mental health plummeting around the end of Fall 2024. During this time, I was struggling, but I was not debilitated by these conditions; I still managed to meet deadlines and stay on track with my academic goals. However, when the winter semester began, I found my conditions exacerbating, which led to immense difficulties in meeting academic goals and deadlines. As my mental health was deteriorating, I was unable to keep up with a rigorous academic workload (the standard five-course workload). I eventually sought help through student wellness and was able to receive a diagnosis of my condition, as well as accommodations to help me navigate both the academic rigour and attending to my own personal mental health needs. The remainder of my classes were in person, allowing me to integrate structure during this period, while also holding me accountable for any work or major assignments that I had due.

At the time, I was enrolled in five courses, two of which were online; however, I did end up withdrawing from one (which put me at four courses in total). With the reduced course load, I believed that I would succeed in the remaining online course while managing content, but this was simply not the case. This is why I was unable to perform successfully in the Law 205 course, since it was completely online, I found it extremely difficult to keep up with the content and maintain my focus, because most of the modules were self-paced. My condition led me to become easily distracted and unmotivated to complete online content and work on time. Moreover, I began to feel extremely anxious about not succeeding in my other (in-person) classes, which led me to dedicate the majority of my focus to my in-person classes, which is why Law 205 was uniquely affected compared to my other classes.

This led me to receive an extremely low grade, which was the lowest grade I have ever received in my academic career. In hindsight, I wish I had dropped this course because I was unable to keep up with the content; as a result, my transcript is now tarnished by a grade that is not indicative nor represent my academic abilities. Since the end of last year, I have prioritized my mental health and my personal needs. I have developed much stronger and healthier habits, allowing me to keep up with the academic rigour and a normal course load.
I would greatly appreciate any consideration regarding this request.
Thank you for your time and understanding.

Sincerely
Roshni Perera
