Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am writing to respectfully request permission to drop PSYC 221 without academic penalty and to have the course removed from my transcript rather than receiving a DR notation. On February 3rd, I wrote the midterm examination for PSYC 221. I was waiting to receive the results of this exam in order to make an informed decision about whether it would be in my best academic interest to remain in the course. However, the midterm grade was not released until late in the evening on February 27th, which was also the final day to drop a course without academic penalty. Because the grade was released so late on the final day of the drop deadline, I did not have sufficient time to properly evaluate my academic standing in the course or make an informed decision before the deadline passed. Compounding this issue, I was scheduled to work that evening, which further limited my ability to review the grade, assess my options, and complete the drop process before the deadline. Receiving the midterm grade only hours before the deadline significantly limited my ability to make a reasonable academic decision. Had the exam results been released earlier, I would have been able to determine sooner whether remaining in the course was appropriate and could have dropped the course before the deadline if necessary. As I am currently in my fourth year of the Honours Bachelor of Science program in Kinesiology, maintaining flexibility in my course schedule is important for ensuring that I can complete my remaining graduation requirements. Allowing me to drop PSYC 221 without penalty would enable me to enroll in another course to fulfill those requirements and stay on track for graduation. For these reasons, I respectfully request approval to drop PSYC 221 without a DR notation, as the timing of the grade release prevented me from making a timely and informed decision before the deadline.
