Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Members of the Academic Review Committee,
I am writing to respectfully submit a petition regarding my academic performance in DEVS 221. After explaining my circumstances to my professor, he emailed me advising that submitting a petition would be the most appropriate course of action. Following his guidance, I am providing an explanation of the extenuating circumstances that affected my academic performance during the term.
Throughout the semester, I experienced significant mental health challenges that were beyond my control. My condition worsened during the term and resulted in multiple hospital visits and periods where I was unable to function at my usual academic capacity. These events occurred while coursework and assignments were ongoing, which made it difficult for me to maintain consistent progress in my classes.
During this period, I struggled with concentration, energy, and emotional stability. As a result, I had difficulty staying organized, keeping up with deadlines, and completing assignments at the level I normally would. These challenges directly affected my ability to complete coursework for DEVS 221.
I attempted to use my academic accommodations to the best of my ability during this time. However, due to the unpredictable nature of my health situation and the times when I required hospital care, the accommodations were not always sufficient to fully address the impact on my coursework. There were periods when I was physically absent because I needed medical attention, and other times when I was present but struggling significantly with my mental health.
In response to these circumstances, I sought professional medical support and received treatment during this time. These steps were necessary in order to stabilize my health and begin working toward recovery while continuing my studies. Despite these efforts, the severity and timing of these challenges still had a direct impact on my academic performance during the semester.
The events described above occurred during an important period of the term and disrupted my ability to complete assignments and participate academically in DEVS 221. The difficulties I experienced during this time were unexpected and beyond my control, and they significantly affected my ability to perform at my usual academic standard.
I take my academic responsibilities seriously, and this experience does not reflect my typical commitment or performance as a student. For this reason, and based on my professor’s recommendation to submit a petition, I respectfully ask the committee to consider the extenuating circumstances that affected my performance during this term. I am also hoping that by doing this, I can continue my studies at Queens as I am hoping this does not impact my GPA. Also, I do not have a letter from a professional, as my visits started as ER overnight stays and only recently in February switched to me being admitted in the BURR unit at KGH.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Aaliyah LaFleur
