Petition Letter

Petition Letter: March 13, 2026
Attn: Associate Dean (Academic)
Faculty of Arts and Science
Queen’s University
Dear Dr. Naaman,
I am writing to request approval to take nine (9) credits on a Letter of Permission—three credits above the standard maximum—to count toward my BA in Psychology with Arts and Science Online.
Due to the discontinuation of ASO courses and my residence in Malaysia, I am unable to access the upper year Psychology courses recommended for competitive admission to Educational/School Psychology master’s programs. These courses are not offered online through Queen’s, and I cannot attend in person. This situation constitutes an exceptional academic constraint beyond my control.
Despite these limitations, I have maintained a high GPA, earned a place on the Dean’s Honour List, and remain on track to graduate with distinction in April 2027. Completing my degree has been a long term goal, pursued while raising my family abroad and adapting to major life transitions. My academic performance demonstrates both my commitment and my ability to succeed in additional upper level coursework.
My intention is to pursue graduate study in Educational/School Psychology—a field of deep personal importance. An Educational Psychologist profoundly improved my son’s educational outcomes, and similar support is urgently needed in Malaysia and Hong Kong, where I maintain residency and such services are scarce. With graduate training, I will be positioned to provide assessments and learning support to children who currently have no access to them, while also contributing to my family’s financial stability as my previous 30 year career as a Registered Massage Therapist is no longer physically possible full time.
Laurentian University offers three online courses—Introduction to Educational Psychology, Introduction to Psychometric Testing, and Cultural Psychology—that together provide essential preparation for applicants to this field. These courses are not available through Queen’s in a format accessible to me, yet they are critical to strengthening my graduate applications and to my academic and professional goals.
Given the combination of (1) exceptional access limitations, (2) the academic necessity of these courses, and (3) my demonstrated high performance and clear educational objectives, I respectfully request approval to complete nine credits on an LOP.
Thank you very much for considering my petition.
Warm regards,
J. Woolsey Harris
