Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Academic),
I am writing to request an extension of my deferred final exam for PSYC 100. I would also like to inquire whether it may be possible to write the exam at an earlier date or at an alternative time outside of the scheduled deferred exam period. If this is not feasible, I respectfully request that my deferral be extended to the next available opportunity.

This request is based on extenuating circumstances related to the recent passing of my grandmother. This occurred during a critical period of the term and had a significant impact on my ability to focus, study, and prepare for my final exams. In the time following this loss, I experienced difficulty concentrating and maintaining my usual level of academic engagement, which directly affected my preparation for PSYC 100.

As a result of these circumstances, I applied for and was granted an initial exam deferral. However, I will be out of the country for an extended period during the official deferred exam window due to pre-existing international travel arrangements. These arrangements were made prior to my grandmother’s passing, and at the time, I did not anticipate that I would require a deferral, nor that my circumstances would continue to impact my academic preparation to the extent that a second deferral would be necessary. As such, I am unable to write the exam during that period.

Since this time, I have taken steps to manage my situation by seeking support through counseling services at the university. This will help me begin to stabilize my academic focus and better manage the impact of these circumstances.

Moving forward, I am confident that I will be able to successfully complete this exam. With additional time and continued support, I will be in a much better position to adequately prepare and demonstrate my understanding of the course material. I am fully committed to completing the exam at the next available opportunity and maintaining my academic progress.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Zoe-Anh Nguyen
