Petition Letter: Dear Petition Appeal Office,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Aliya Willinger, and I am currently a third-year student in the Department of Sociology. I am writing to formally request consideration for a Credit (CR) standing in PHIL 204 Life, Death, and Meaning W25, which I completed approximately one year ago.
The academic disruptions caused by the strike significantly impacted my experience in this course and, ultimately, my final grade. During the strike period, the course was not actively running, and the instructor—who was a graduate student—lost access to their university accounts. This made it extremely difficult to receive guidance or understand how to proceed with course requirements. It was communicated to the class that the final assignment for PHIL 204 became optional during this time. Once the course had concluded, the instructor asked for students—such as myself, who decided to not complete the optional final—to email them to confirm that they would not like this grade to be considered. Due to extenuating personal circumstances, I did not have access to my devices to email the professor, as this was after the semester had ended. My previous attempts to contact the instructor were unsuccessful, and I received an automated response indicating that their email was not being monitored due to the strike.
Given these circumstances, I was left without adequate academic support or clarity during a critical period of the course. As a result, my final grade does not accurately reflect my abilities or the effort I put into the class. Based on my performance throughout the term, particularly in earlier assessments, it is evident that I was on track to achieve a significantly higher grade (approximately in the A range). However, my transcript currently reflects a D+, which is not representative of my work or academic performance in PHIL 204 throughout the entirety of the 2025 winter semester.
In light of these exceptional circumstances, I respectfully request that my final grade for this course be converted to a Credit (CR) standing. I believe this adjustment would more fairly reflect the impact of the strike and prevent an inaccurate representation of my academic record and GPA.
