Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Academic Appeal Committee,
This letter is a formal request to petition to change my final grade for PSYCH100 from an F to a late drop. I’m requesting this change as a result of extenuating circumstances that significantly impacted my ability to succeed in this course.
Throughout my first year of study, I was dealing with undiagnosed, and unsupported conditions, including depression, ADHD, and autism, which affected my ability to manage my workload. This also impacted my grades significantly. Of all my courses PSYCH100 proved to be the most challenging. Amongst the reasons for this, was the format of the PSYCH 100 being a full year course heavily weighted on just 2 exams. In the first semester, I was struggling, but passing however, as a result of the strike in the second semester, I now realize I was unable to get the support I needed to learn the material and to prepare and succeed in my final assessments. In addition to the strike cancelling all the classes, the tutorials also canceled that gave weekly learning checks and support on understanding the material, which also meant I was no longer able to get participation marks. As a result, the course was reweighted with 50% of my final grade being put into one evaluation, which was a disadvantage for me due to my undiagnosed learning challenges and lack of support I needed to succeed. At the time my conditions were still undiagnosed, which made me unaware of how they were affecting my learning and performance. Since my diagnoses, I now realize that given the challenges that I faced, which were exacerbated by the strike, there was no way for me to succeed in the course.
I take full responsibility for my actions; however, my poor academic outcome in this course by a combination of combination of factors that created circumstances that were outside of my control, which prevented me from succeeding. Since my diagnoses, I’ve been working with my psychologist who’s provided me with coaching and medication, and I’ve received academic accommodations to support my success. As a result, my grades and performance this year have significantly improved. My continued access to these supports will continue to aid me learning and growing as a student at Queen’s.
Given all this, I request that my failed grade be converted into a late drop, as I believe that it would be fairer and more accurately reflect my academic abilities rather than the challenges that I faced during that course. By converting into a late drop it will no longer unfairly impact my GPA and academic standing negatively. Thank you for your time and consideration on this matter.
