Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Academic Petition Committee,

I am writing to respectfully request Credit Standing for SOCY 235 (Winter 2026).

During the Winter 2026 term, I experienced significant health-related extenuating circumstances beyond my control that adversely affected my academic performance. As supported by documentation from Student Wellness Services, these circumstances impaired my ability to concentrate, organize, and perform at my usual academic level. I am also registered with QSAS and have ongoing academic accommodations in place, reflecting the continuing nature of these challenges.

The impact of these circumstances was most significant during the midterm period. In the days leading up to the midterm, I experienced several consecutive nights of severe insomnia and heightened anxiety. At the time of the examination, I was in a significantly impaired physical and cognitive state, experiencing dizziness, headaches, and extreme fatigue, which substantially affected my ability to concentrate and perform.

Although my condition was not suitable for writing the exam, I felt unable to defer further, as the midterm had already been postponed once and the final assessment for the course was scheduled only three days later. As a result, I proceeded with the midterm under these conditions.

This is reflected in the discrepancy in my performance: I received 20.93% on the midterm, compared to 82% on my Reading Reflection and 92% on the End of Term Quiz completed three days later. This contrast demonstrates that the midterm result does not accurately reflect my academic ability, but rather the acute impact of my health condition at that specific time.

Importantly, I was able to complete all course requirements, including the final assessment. My performance in other components of the course was significantly stronger and more consistent with my usual academic level once my condition began to stabilize.

Given this clear discrepancy, I respectfully submit that my final grade of 58.67 in SOCY 235 was disproportionately affected by documented extenuating circumstances and is substantially lower than what would reasonably be expected based on my overall performance in the course.

In light of this, and in accordance with the criteria for Credit Standing, I respectfully request that I be granted Credit Standing for this course so that I may retain the academic credit without the grade negatively impacting my GPA.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I would be happy to provide any additional information if required.

Sincerely,

Leah Lyu
