Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Faculty,

I am writing this letter because I am asking to drop my MATH 121 course.

This course was one of the options I needed to major in ECON for my economic plan. I wanted to take this course and major because I took an Economics course in high school and really enjoyed it. Math wasn’t my strongest subject, and I took Advanced Functions twice. I also went to a school where I was able to carry over my math class for the whole school year. Knowing this, I knew math would be a challenge in university, but I wanted to push through it.

However, the first time I took Advanced Functions I was doing well, but I ended up having a Seizure in class during the teacher’s lesson. I didn’t drop the class and kept studying and doing my work but, two weeks later I ended up having another seizure at home while I was doing math practice. It was then decided by my teachers to take me out of math for a while since I had been diagnosed with Epilepsy. This was when I decided to take grade 13 and do Advanced Functions then.

I am now wanting to change majors because of my marks in this math class, and my marks are significantly greater in other classes that I have found a higher interest in.

When I first took this course I was not aware that it was harder than MATH 127 and that taking calculus in high school was highly recommended. However, when I found this out I didn’t want to quit and wanted to prove to myself that I could do this. I am currently doing significantly bad in this class and would like to have the mark taken off of my transcript so my GPA is not greatly decreased.

When I realized I was not going to do well in the class I emailed PASS (before the April 6th deadline), we went back and forth and came to the agreement that I would drop this class to get a DR on my transcript that would not affect my GDP. I had thought that when we finished emailing the advisor would be the one to drop the course for me. As when I did research on dropping courses at Queen’s University, I found that I needed to talk to a PASS advisor to do so. Neither of us explicitly said that we were the one to be dropping the course off my transcript and I wrongfully assumed that she would have been the one. We finished our conversation and I thanked her for her help.

After about a week, I kept noticing that I was still in the class on OnQ and getting notifications about assignments. I didn’t think too much into it and decided to let some time pass as I remember I am in some of my classes from last semester and the other classes took a while to be removed from my homepage. However, I started feeling a bit anxious and decided to email the advisor. After I did so, I was told by my friend that we as students were able to drop classes on SOLUS so I went ahead and let them guide me on how to do so. I then attempted to drop the class to see if it would say It has already been dropped but it didn’t.

After receiving a response from the advisor, I was told I would need to make a petition to drop the class.

Thank you for your time and your guidance is greatly appreciated,

Brody Geear
