Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am writing to you to request to waive the 21 day deadline for an academic appeal in order to drop my failed grades for courses I took in the school year of 2014-2015. These courses are Music P52, Geography 102, Chemistry 112, Commerce 200 and Ensc 301.
I did not submit an appeal before the proper deadline because I had extenuating circumstances regarding my personal well-being and mental health which continued throughout my time of studies last school year of 2014-2015 and until now. I was experiencing a personal crisis that really negatively impacted my mental health, my academic performance and my ability and energy to concentrate and function normally and productively every day. I believe my poor mental health had gotten more severe throughout this year. After the 2015 winter term ended and up until now, it has been very personally difficult for me to recover from the debilitating effects it had on me mentally and physically and I continued to experience deep feelings of depression, anxiety and self-destructive thoughts. Thus, my condition negatively affected my ability to make good decisions and judgments and caused me to feel helpless in improving my situation so I regret that I continued to make poor and irresponsible decisions that risked further damaging my academic future.
To support my appeal, I will submit supporting documentation provided by my counsellor as soon as possible. I greatly appreciate your time and consideration in this matter. Thank you very much.
Regards,
Priscilla Ton

Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
I am writing to you to appeal to drop my failed courses which are Music P52, Geography 102 (Fall 2014) and Chemistry 112, Commerce 200 and Ensc 301 (Winter 2015).
I am asking for an appeal because I had extenuating circumstances that affected my academic performance and it led to poor choices I made such as not dropping the courses by the proper deadlines. My reason is that I had encountered personal problems that negatively affected my mental health and well-being and in turn negatively impacted my life and my ability to function and concentrate every day. Since the end of the 2014 fall term, I was suffering from depression and because of that I regretfully made poor decisions and showed a total lack of responsibility and initiative that I have never experienced before regarding my academic performance. Because I was under so much stress and mental anguish, it made it difficult for me to focus and take my academic performance seriously so that is why I disregarded completing assignments for my courses and I found it difficult and almost impossible to concentrate and engage in the material I learned from lectures and texts which caused me to suffer in writing exams. I did not initially realize how my mental health was getting worse and that I was losing control of my life as I continued to fall deeper into my depression. Instead of fulfilling my responsibilities and working hard and succeeding in my studies like I wished, I was instead constantly living every day feeling very depressed, fatigued and withdrawn and isolated from school and social activities. I did not realize sooner the seriousness of my situation and how harmful and disruptive it was to my life and how my increasingly unproductive and self-destructive behaviour was seriously affecting my academic future.
When I realized later in the year how dire my academic situation has become because of my mental state, I took steps to try to deal with my circumstances by consulting with the school counselling services. I started going to weekly counselling appointments and I found it crucially helpful for my mental health. I am glad that I was able to receive support I urgently needed for my mental distress and it helped me in gaining back control and to attempt to rectify my academic situation in any possible way I had left.
In order to take full responsibility in improving my academic situation, my current plans for my future will focus on taking great care to improve my mental health and taking time out to seriously evaluate my decisions and goals regarding my academic future. In order to do this, I am withdrawing from university for at least one year to take time to reflect on my future. I will research and seek extensive guidance in order to make the right choices to aid me in achieving a more successful future once I re-enroll in a school again. Also, once I re-enroll in school again, I will make certain that I seek guidance immediately if I encounter struggles with my mental health and/or my academic progress. I will also take serious note of drop deadlines if I am struggling at all with my course load in the future. Furthermore, I am currently consulting a mental health professional on a regular basis and I will continue to do so to help improve and strengthen my mental health in order to develop a strong support system in order to prevent making damaging mistakes again.
To support my appeal, I will submit supporting documentation provided by my counsellor as soon as possible. Thank you for your time and consideration, I greatly appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Priscilla Ton
