Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing this letter to appeal for Credit standing in FILM 110 Film, Culture and Communication, which is a full year course began in fall semester 2013 and went through the winter semester of 2014.

In the fall of 2013, I joined Queen's University as an international student and enrolled in the Faculty of Art & Science. I was thrilled for the opportunity to study at Queen's and prepared to discover my potential in both academic learning and private life. However, I was suffered severely from homesickness, peer pressure and cultural clash. Living alone in Canada for the first time, I struggled to reconcile my cultural values with life in Canada which made me feel lonely, emotional unsecured and marginalized. I found it rather difficult to fit in the Queen's community and maintain concentration during the lecture. I was so depressed that I sought for advises from my residence' don Mitangi Parekh and my art history professor. Sharing my feeling and concerns with someone else helped me to calm down, but my situation fluctuated. I did poorly in FILM 110 because my evaluation was predominately based on class performances and group work. Due to my pressure, anxiety and lack of confidence, I failed to contribute creative imagination and thoughtful inquiry.

It is because of circumstances that were out of my control that I performed poorly in this course or my first academic year. In my second year I tried to deal with my emotional breakdown by exercising on a regular basis, working part-time and volunteering at the Union Gallery on campus. I saw great achievement made in managing schoolwork and private life that my average GPA for fall 2014 and winter 2015 is 3.775, an average score of 87.8 out of 100. I have worked hard ever since and prepared to graduate early next fall with full credit achieved. Therefore I can not afford to get a failure on my transcript, which would largely affect my chances of being accepted by an employee or a Master's Degree program.

I will be happy to answer any questions and provide related information. Thanks you for taking time to review my request.

Sincerely,

Rong Zou
