Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Subject: Petition for a Letter of Permission

Dear Associate-Dean,

My name is Liam Prendergast, and I am writing to respectfully request approval of my petition for a letter of permission to enroll in more than the usual 6.0 units of courses, approved for completion during the summer term through another institution for the Faculty of Arts and Science.
I am currently scheduled to begin my final year (year 5) of my Concurrent Education program this upcoming fall 2026. I have successfully completed all my requirements for entry into this final year, except for 9.0 remaining units in my History major at the 300-400 level (HIST 333-499). I had attempted to complete these remaining credits during my 4th year; however, I was only permitted to take one upper-year seminar alongside my core seminar. To be approved for this permission, I had to demonstrate that I could maintain a B- average in my core seminar by the end of the fall semester. Because I did, I was able to take a one-semester upper-year seminar, leaving me with only 9.0 credits remaining. Completion of these 9.0 units is necessary for me to progress as planned into my final Concurrent Education year. If I am unable to complete these remaining units before the fall term, my Final Year placement would need to be deferred to Fall 2027, resulting in a full-year delay in my graduation. The specific courses I was required to complete were not offered at Queens this summer as I had hoped, so I have proactively researched and identified equivalent courses from other institutions. Completing these courses on a letter of permission is the only viable way for me to fulfill my degree requirements in time to begin my final year this fall.
I would also like to highlight my ability to manage an increased academic workload. During the past academic year, I successfully completed a full course load while taking on additional course overload, hoping to set myself up to graduate on time. This experience has prepared me to undertake the proposed 9.0 units responsibly and effectively over the summer term. This would be a much lighter course load compared to what I have had to deal with this past year, and I would truly be able to devote maximum effort to these courses. I am fully committed to completing my program on time and to maintaining the academic standards expected of me. Granting this request would allow me to remain on track for graduation and continue in my final year cohort without such a delay. ,

Thank you kindly for your time and consideration of my request. I sincerely appreciate your understanding.

Kind regards,
Liam Prendergast

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: My plan, which I have developed alongside my Academic advisor from the Four Directions Indigenous Student Center and my Con-Ed advisor, is first and foremost to present the classes I researched at Athabasca University to the History Department for approval as equivalencies. I intend to work only part-time this summer to allow myself adequate time to concentrate on my studies and do well in the remaining 9.0 units. As I mentioned in my petition, this would be a drastically reduced course load compared to what I took on during the fall and winter terms of this past year, so I expect to be able to excel. My advisors have informed me that starting with courses from Athabasca in June will see me receive grades around mid-August, just in time to receive my BAH in October and continue in my regular Con-Ed stream.
